So what other games/game companies do you recommend

Just wondering what the rest of you have found entertaining over time.

My list:
RPGs
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (1 and 2)
Dragon Age (Bioware == great game)
Neverwinter Knights
Divine Divinity (same company has a new game out and I will definitely be trying it!
The Witcher - Geralt of Riva == damned cool
Oblivion - gorgeous and interesting. I tried Morrowind but it's so big and open that it scares me. :)
Sacred - the original I like. Don't really like the second - so many small quests you never move along the story.

Adventure games
LucasArts Monkey Island series.
The Longest Journey

Desktop games
Luxor
Big Kuhana Reef 2 - great game ++ infinitely expandable with a designer tool.

That's a start though I have more if I could remember them. :)

  1. Oh Boy! This is my kind of discussion! Here's my list.

    RPGs and Hack 'n' Slash:
    Diablo/Diablo II Lord of Destruction
Morrowind (I'm in love with this game. Haven't played Oblivion yet because my computer couldn't handle it. I've upgraded since, so I'll try again one of these days)
Mount and Blade (shareware; the single most perfect implementation of mounted combat in any game, ever)
    Dark Cloud series

    MMORPGs:
Kingdom of Loathing (I lost interest in this, but it appeals mightily to my sense of humor)
    Runescape
    Supreme Destiny Online
    Silkroad Online
Modus Operandi (bears explanation because, assuming it still exists, it's a surprisingly, incredibly addictive text based MMORPG set in modern times, with a strict rule of staying in character. I only stopped playing because the monthly fee didn't fit into the budget. I still want to go back some day.)

    Adventure games:
The Longest Journey (haven't played two yet, but I will some day. The original is one of my favorites for its sheer beauty and novelty of the storyline; the fact that it plays to an adult audience is very refreshing and appealing)
    Beyond Good and Evil
Thief series (first person sneaker and simply one of my favorite games of all time)
    Oni (another all time favorite)

I had Escape from Monkey Island a long time ago, but stopped playing when I got irretrievably stuck. I love the humor in that game.

    Desktop games:
    Diner Dash
    Cake Mania
    Bloxorz (very stylish looking puzzle)
    Castle of the Winds
    Magic: the Gathering
    Schiffbruch (aka Shipwreck)
    Stranded

    Online "time wasters"
    Farm 52 at bigseagames
    Dino Run at pixeljam

and of course the good, old NES games.

I love board games, too. My favorites are Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, and Scrabble.

I have more too, if I could recall them. I want to try some of the ones off y'all's lists. (Yes, that's actually a word in Texas.)

  2. PiB, re: Morrowind.
Before TS3 came out last summer, I'd gotten heavily back into Morrowind after many years. This time, before the Sims captured me, I managed to create a thief character that I took all the way to the top of his guild so that he got his own stronghold built for him. I decorated it with all my favorite stolen loot, and one of these days I'm going to take some screenshots for you. Don't be afraid of how big the world is. If you love Oblivion, you'll love Morrowind at least as much. I'd do it tonight but I'm not home and don't have the disk with me.

  3. MMORPGs
City of Heroes. (It's a monthly pay game so you all might not like it. I more than got my monies worth).

    RPGs
    Dragon's Age (Hubby is addicted)
KoTor (I only played the first one)
Basically anything by Bioware is a good product.

    Other
    Rollercoaster Tycoon (all editions)
    Star Wars Legos
    Tropico (the first edition)
Theme Hospital (a very old game but lots of fun)

    Desktop
    Build a Lot
And too many others to list.

I'm looking forward to the new Star Wars MMORPG. It looks yummy.

  4. I always wanted to play Neverwinter Nights back when it was on AOL, but back then, as now, I'd already stretched my entertainment budget to the limit, and it just never happened. That tells you how old I am - lol.

  5. *blush*

Mostly if I am not playing sims, I play first person shooter/Hack and slash/horror playstation games.

    Some titles included...

    The GTA series
    Medal of Honor series
    Army of Two
    Silent Hill series
    Resident Evil series
    Hitman series
    Black

    Ratchet and Clank series
    Jak and Daxter series
    Worms

  6. I tried Silent Hill 2 and LOVED it, so wonderfully creepy, until I got stuck and couldn't progress. That happens to me with games a lot. I love them but am not necessarily good at them.

Same with Hitman. I love stealth games but, again, am not always good at them. I kick ass at Thief, though. And Oni is as much of a sneaker as a shooter.

Oh and, Worsie, today I went to a store I'd not been to before, doing some Christmas shopping, and guess what I found for myself? A flake bar! *AND* an Aero bar. I'm in choco heaven right this minute. Tee, hee.

  7. For amazing environment and mega death, I have Painkiller. If it moves, it's an enemy and must die.

But I didn't get very far and then got to one of those 'you must get the timing perfect' moments. I should boot it again sometime, the first few levels are damned cool (and full of the Damned).

Same for me and Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. I got to this one place and couldn't work out how or where to progress. The controls for that game were way to twitchy for me. The previous game I did get a long way into...can't remember if I finished.

I'll put Thief on my list to try.

I do love Diablo II, another oldies but goodie. You'd like Divine Divinty for the same reason.

  8. Thief is so old it may be hard to find. Try Ebay if you can't find it in used game stores. I'll give you a head up. The first two in the series are considered by fans to be pretty much peerless game play. Die hard fans don't like 3 because it's a different engine and the maps are smaller, but I love it. If you like pretty graphics, go for 3. I want to hear about it if you do try it. Ditto Morrowind. If I have any money left after the holidays, I'm going to get some new games. First choices are Oblivion, Dragon Age, Divine Divinity, or Longest Journey 2. Maybe by that time my sims obsession will have relaxed enough to at least allow me a few minutes with another game. LOL.

  9. I was just at Amazon.com and found the THIEF Collection (The Dark Project, The Metal Age II, and Deadly Shadows III) there.

Divine Divinity I've seen in the el-cheapo game jewel case racks in places like CompUSA. You should be able to get it for less than $15.

Morrowind has pretty graphics - I just get worried that I'll miss something important because there isn't as obvious a storyline and quests. Oblivion you should definitely try. Though Morrowind fans think that Oblivion is a little too story driven. :)

Longest Journey 2 I have. But it failed to capture me like Longest Journey did. I don't remember why. I should try again during the Christmas break. It might just have been a mood thing, sometimes you aren't ready to play one game.

You ever try the Broken Sword trilogy? The first one was another that was very cool for the time.

  10. No, I haven't tried that one. This is why I'm glad we have this group blog. I can refer to this when I get ready for a new game and not have to try to remember.

I know what you mean about not wanting to miss something in an open ended game, but that's what I like about it. There are plenty of websites with lists and walkthroughs, should you want them, of all the quests.

PiB, I'm so glad you started this thread. ;)

  11. Me, too! I know a lot of these games because hubby loves them but most of them I haven't tried. Another place to find old games is Goodwill, believe it or not. I was searching and searching for KoToR and a friend found it there for me.

  12. Removed comment for being silly

:) I'm glad I started this thread too. It's nice to see what we play if we can tear away from the Sims

BTW - Sue back at the top, I too have a Kingdom of Loathing account. I've even bought a few Mr Accessories to show my appreciation.

  13. LOL, Sue, I am glad you found a flake!

We got some free flakes in our xmas chocolate box and I thought of you when I was munching one.

I like Silent Hill because of the puzzles, you have to think a bit. But the problem is if you do not do things in just the right sequence, it messes you up later.

Hubbie played 'Hitman' and he got the newspaper rating of 'Mad Butcher' ... we all had a good laugh at that.

I forgot.... TOMB RAIDER! I am a Lara Croft fan too, especially for the puzzles but I HATE those ridiculous jumps they sometimes expect for her to make!

My kids love the lego games and we have Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones. They really cute... but I get ticked off when I lose lego pieces LOL

I think I will look out for Diablo, never bought it but the box always looked intriguing.

I have seen Dragon Age for PS3 but have not thought to buy it... I see some of you play it, is it any good?

Who remember's "Hero's Quest"? I absolutely loved that game!

OH.. and "Leisure Suit Larry".. LOL

  14. I might try Tomb Raider again. I had it for PS2, but the PS2 died. I remember I loved it except for, as you say, those ridiculously hard jumps. I remember I got stuck at one place where you had to make a REALLY long swim underwater and I kept dying. I love the idea of a kick-ass heroine, though. That's why I like Oni, the hero is sort of a sci-fi Lara Croft.

  16. Oops, had to delete a comment. Once again I've forgotten how to post a link in a comment. Anyhoo, what I'd said was that I posted some non-sims game screenshots at http://suednimphotos.blogspot.com/
