GAH!

I'm still exiting to the desktop or it will try to save and get caught in a loop.  I checked my processes and memory consumption.

What's happening is Sims 3 is suddenly spiking and gobbling all the free memory in the system, massive amounts of memory.  It's astonishing.

I've looked online and found a possible solution using CFF Explorer which edits the .exe file.  You set the .exe file to allow for more than 2GB as the app won't utilize the memory a computer has over 2GB.  I'm very hesitant to do this but at this point the game is not playable.

I'm loathe to reinstall yet, again.  I have a computer that is less than a month old.  I have 4 GB ram and an  Intel Core i7 processor 3.20 GHZ.  I'm at a loss.

  1. Isn't this interesting! CFF Explorer worked. I played with no crashes. I took the time to look at my processes as I played. Sims 3 was taking 3.11 GB of memory and going for more. That's nuts!

  2. Well, no crashes is good.

You might want to try tech support - every once in a while, tech support does have an answer and at least you have a symptom to tell them.

  3. The issue is the game is eating more and more resources, spiraling out of control. I do think I've seen this mentioned by other gamers before but I can't find it at the moment.

It's definitely a game issue. None of the solutions on the forums put forward by Guru's address this issue. It's just the standard clean caches or reinstall. Perhaps I'm missing something. I'm not sure tech support would be any help and might just be more frustrating.

  4. Wow, I don't understand a word you just said. :D

I know nothing of any of that stuff.

I'm glad you were able to play without crashing.

Jeez, I feel so ignorant right now. I felt as though I was reading a foreign language. :D

  5. Dee, I love you. You always make me smile.

Basically, the games minimum requirements are 2GB memory to run the game. My game is taking over 3 GB and asking for more memory. I don't see it improving.

I called tech support. I was told to reinstall. *sigh*

  6. Thank you Chrysame. On the side of my computer it states 8GB System memory. It also has 750GB hard drive. I guess? I should be good to go for another 1 or two EP's?

  7. That's awesome, Dee!

  8. I don't have a video card though. I have an integrated chip. I wouldn't even know the difference if I hadn't read about it on the forum.

This is the computer I saved for 9 months to buy. Bought it right before Sims 3 was supposed to be released and then it was delayed. I was climbing the walls. The desktop it replaced was at least 8 years old and barely played sims one. Wouldn't play sims 2 at all. I played that on a hand me down laptop.

  9. This might be a good thing. Why? Because hubby and I have been really digging into things. We found that one of my memory stick had gone bad. New computer and already a bad stick. Anywhoooo, I'm going to go out tomorrow and buy another stick, replace it and see if that makes a difference.

I don't understand memory leaks other than to know they happens so we'll see if this fixes the problem.

I still have enough game play for a couple of updates. But, I'm anxious for Dee's Carolina North P.I. blog to get going!

  10. Well, it's going. I can't figure out a way to make it really funny. Maybe some days will be better than others. :)

  11. I used the CFF Explorer option a couple months ago, and it has completely transformed my gaming experience. Before the fix, I quit the game repeatedly because I got so frustrated with it.

I had to fiddle with my OS a bit since I have a 32-bit OS instead of a 64-bit, but I've had no problems so far, so... so good.

Adding Sims3 to the DEP list also helps with crashing issues, but it doesn't get rid of the nasty Error 12 issue that EA has decided they'll never resolve. *eyeroll*

  12. I tried DEP before I used CFF Explorer. The difference with CFF is amazing.

I've never had to use so many outside sources to resolve game issues. Although, to be fair, generally when I have this many problems with a game, I just stop playing it.

  13. It's pretty sad that it comes to outside intervention to actually make the game work, but it's not entirely the Sims3 team's fault. From what I gather reading through various sites that suggest this fix, it's a problem from the very "core" of the game, a core used in several other games that have experienced similar problems... The reason it's worse with Sims 3 is because it's a diabolical memory hog compared to most games.

I don't blame them for not being able to fix it, since they really can't, but this option should be "advertised" a little more so people don't outright quit when they begin to experience problems. :P
